From Automation to Real Value

#Automation #Robotics #MarketIntelligence

Aaron Prather has spent more than two decades working at the intersection of technology and real-world operations. From developing operational systems at FedEx to leading robotics and autonomous systems initiatives at ASTM International, and now examining the automation market at A3, his perspective has expanded from what technology can do to where it can create lasting business value.

Today, Aaron looks beyond the technology itself. His work focuses on where companies are actually investing, which technologies are moving from pilot programs into production, what is holding adoption back, and where expectations may be running ahead of reality.

Q. How has your perspective on automation evolved throughout your career, from working with it in real-world operations at FedEx to standards and robotics at ASTM, and now market intelligence at A3?

My perspective has evolved from thinking primarily about what automation can do to focusing much more on what it should do and, ultimately, whether it creates real business value.

At FedEx, I lived with automation in the real world. A great demo meant very little if the technology couldn’t survive a loading dock at 2 a.m., integrate with existing operations, and deliver measurable results. At ASTM, my perspective broadened again. Standards, safety, interoperability and trust aren’t things you address after innovation; they’re what allow innovation to scale.

Now at A3, I’m looking at automation from an even wider lens. I’m less interested in the robot itself and more interested in the market around it: where companies are actually investing, what’s moving from pilot to production, what’s holding adoption back, and where the hype is running ahead of reality.

The future of automation may depend less on what technology can do, and more on where it creates real value.
