하지만 브랜드가 실제로 미국 고객을 만나고, 구매로 이어지고, 다시 선택되기까지의 과정은 훨씬 복잡하다. 상품 설명을 영어로 바꾸고 해외 배송을 여는 것만으로는 충분하지 않다. 가격, 통관, 배송, 반품, CS, 리뷰, 프로모션까지 고객이 경험하는 모든 과정이 현지 기준에 맞춰져야 한다.

W컨셉 글로벌사업을 이끌고 있는 이은영 총괄은 한국 브랜드의 미국 진출을 단순한 수출이나 판매의 문제가 아니라, 브랜드와 고객 사이의 간극을 줄이는 일로 바라본다. 좋은 브랜드가 해외 시장에서 지속적으로 성장하기 위해서는 상품력 위에 글로벌 브랜딩, 현지화, 반복 구매를 만드는 운영의 힘이 함께 필요하다고 말한다.

이번 인터뷰에서는 이은영 W컨셉 글로벌사업 총괄에게 W컨셉 글로벌이 풀고 있는 문제, 한국 브랜드가 미국 시장에서 성장하기 위해 필요한 현지화, 그리고 좋은 브랜드가 해외 고객에게 더 잘 전달되기 위한 조건에 대해 물었다.

Q1. W컨셉 USA, 또는 W컨셉 글로벌은 어떤 문제를 푸는 조직인가요?

W컨셉 글로벌은 2014년에 W컨셉 미국 법인을 설립하고, 2017년 미국 사이트를 오픈한 것을 시작으로 한국의 좋은 컨템포러리 디자이너 브랜드의 글로벌 진출을 지원해 왔습니다.

한국에는 감도 높고 경쟁력 있는 디자이너 브랜드가 많지만, 브랜드가 직접 해외 고객을 만나고, 현지 시장에 맞게 자신을 알리며, 판매와 운영까지 이어가기에는 현실적인 어려움이 많습니다.

W컨셉 글로벌은 이 사이에서 브랜드사에게는 글로벌 수출과 성장의 기회를 제공하고, 고객에게는 한국의 프리미엄 디자인 브랜드를 큐레이션해 소개합니다. 상품 번역, 콘텐츠, 마케팅, 프로모션, 배송, CS, 인플루언서 협업 등 브랜드와 고객이 만나는 다양한 과정을 하나의 플랫폼 안에서 연결하고 있습니다.

Q2. 한국 브랜드가 미국 시장에서 성장하기 위해 가장 중요하게 봐야 할 지점은 무엇인가요?

가장 중요하게 봐야 할 지점은 타깃 국가에 대한 현지화, 즉 Localization이라고 생각합니다.

여기서 말하는 현지화는 단순히 상품 설명을 영어로 번역하거나 미국으로 배송하는 수준이 아닙니다. 미국 시장의 소비 패턴, 가격 민감도, 배송 기대 수준, 반품 문화, 통관 환경까지 반영해 사업 방식을 다시 맞춰가는 일에 가깝습니다.

지금 미국 시장에서 K-브랜드에 대한 기회는 분명히 커지고 있습니다. K-뷰티를 중심으로 한국 브랜드에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있고, 이 흐름은 K-패션과 라이프스타일 영역으로도 확장되고 있습니다. 다만 시장의 관심이 커지는 만큼, 미국 고객이 불편함 없이 구매할 수 있는 기반을 갖추는 것이 더 중요해졌습니다.

동시에 미국 역직구 시장의 외부 환경도 빠르게 바뀌고 있습니다. 특히 de minimis 면세 혜택 중단과 관세 부담 확대는 기존의 직구형 B2C 모델에 큰 변화를 요구하고 있습니다. 과거에는 한국에서 미국 고객에게 직접 발송하는 방식으로도 가격 경쟁력을 만들 수 있었지만, 이제는 관세, 통관, 배송비, 반품 비용까지 포함한 전체 비용 흐름을 함께 봐야 하는 시점이 되었습니다.

미국 시장을 준비하는 한국 브랜드는 콘텐츠와 마케팅뿐 아니라 물류, 통관, HS Code, DDP, 반품, CS, 현지 풀필먼트까지 함께 고민해야 합니다. 고객이 결제 단계에서 최종 비용을 예측할 수 있는지, 배송은 안정적인지, 반품은 쉬운지, 추가 비용으로 인한 불만이 발생하지 않는지까지 모두 중요한 경쟁력이 됩니다.

미국 시장에서의 현지화는 화면이나 언어의 문제가 아니라, 고객이 실제 구매 과정에서 느끼는 불확실성을 줄이는 일이라고 생각합니다. 상품 설명, 이미지, 콘텐츠, 가격, 결제, 배송, 반품, CS까지 모두 현지 기준에 맞게 정리될 때 브랜드에 대한 신뢰도 함께 쌓일 수 있습니다.

한 단계 더 나아가, 미국에서 지속적으로 성장하려는 브랜드라면 현지에서 성장하는 방식도 검토해야 한다고 봅니다. 장기적으로는 B2C 직구 모델을 넘어 현지 풀필먼트, 보세창고, B2B2C 방식처럼 재고와 주문 처리의 일부를 현지화하는 방향이 필요할 수 있습니다. 이렇게 되면 배송 속도와 반품 편의성이 좋아지고, 가격 운영도 더 안정적으로 가져갈 수 있습니다.

미국 시장은 여전히 크고 매력적인 시장입니다. 다만 이제 중요한 것은 단순히 미국 고객에게 판매하는 것이 아니라, 미국 시장의 룰에 맞게 사업 방식을 바꿔가는 것입니다.

한국 브랜드가 미국에서 지속적으로 성장하기 위해서는 콘텐츠와 마케팅은 물론, 가격, 통관, 물류, 반품까지 포함한 전반적인 현지화가 함께 준비되어야 한다고 생각합니다.

Q3. 글로벌 사업을 오래 해오시면서, 좋은 브랜드가 해외에서 더 잘 전달되기 위해 필요한 것은 무엇이라고 보시나요?

좋은 브랜드가 해외에서 성공하기 위해서는 상품력 위에 글로벌 브랜딩, 현지화, 반복 구매를 만드는 힘이 함께 더해져야 한다는 점입니다.

한국 브랜드는 이미 감도 높은 상품력과 개성 있는 스토리를 가지고 있습니다. 다만 해외 고객에게 선택받기 위해서는 그 브랜드가 왜 좋은지, 어떤 고객에게 어울리는지, 어느 순간에 필요한지, 왜 이 가격으로 구매할 만한지까지 현지 고객의 언어와 감각으로 전달되어야 합니다.

오랫동안 글로벌 이커머스와 브랜드 사업을 경험하면서, 해외 고객이 상품을 접하고 구매로 이어지는 과정은 매우 입체적이라는 것을 느꼈습니다. 검색, 콘텐츠, 가격, 리뷰, 결제, 배송, 반품, CS, 프로모션처럼 구매를 결정하는 요소들이 촘촘하게 맞물려야 하고, 여기에 브랜드의 감도와 스토리가 더해질 때 진짜 브랜드 성장으로 이어질 수 있습니다.

좋은 브랜드의 글로벌 성장은 한 번에 완성되지 않는다고 생각합니다. 처음에는 브랜드를 알리고 고객 반응을 검증하는 진입기가 있고, 이후에는 히어로 상품과 반복 구매를 만들며 특정 국가나 카테고리에서 성과를 키우는 확장기가 있습니다. 그리고 장기적으로는 브랜드 인지도, 수익성, 현지 파트너십, 브랜드 자산을 쌓아가는 성숙기로 나아가야 합니다.

이 과정에서 중요한 것은 단순히 많이 노출되는 것이 아니라, 고객이 그 브랜드를 선택해야 하는 이유를 만들어주는 것입니다. 브랜드의 무드와 스토리, 대표 상품, 고객 후기, 구매 이후의 경험이 일관되게 쌓일 때 해외 고객에게도 하나의 브랜드로 기억될 수 있습니다. 특히 해외에서는 작은 불편함도 브랜드 인식에 영향을 주기 때문에, 브랜딩과 운영이 함께 맞물려야 합니다.

브랜드의 본질은 지키되, 현지 고객이 자연스럽게 접하고 공감하고 다시 구매할 수 있도록 만드는 것. 그것이 좋은 브랜드가 해외에서 오래 성장하기 위한 핵심이라고 봅니다.

브랜드가 왜 좋은지, 어떤 고객에게 어울리는지, 왜 이 가격으로 구매할 만한지까지 현지 고객의 언어와 감각으로 전달되어야 한다. 그리고 그 기대가 결제, 배송, 반품, CS, 구매 이후의 경험까지 이어질 때 브랜드에 대한 신뢰가 쌓인다.

한국 브랜드가 현지의 기준 안에서 다시 정리되고, 고객의 일상 속에서 반복적으로 선택되기 위한 성장의 무대다.

The global expansion of Korean brands is often discussed in the language of opportunity.

Beginning with K-beauty, interest in Korean brands has continued to grow, and this momentum is now expanding into K-fashion and lifestyle. For Korean brands with strong products and refined design sensibilities, the U.S. market remains a large and attractive stage.

However, the process of actually reaching American customers, converting that interest into purchases, and being chosen again is far more complex. Translating product descriptions into English and opening international shipping are not enough. Every part of the customer experience—including pricing, customs clearance, delivery, returns, customer service, reviews, and promotions—must be aligned with local expectations.

Eunyoung Lee, Head of Global Business at W Concept, views the U.S. expansion of Korean brands not simply as a matter of exports or sales, but as the work of narrowing the gap between brands and customers. For a strong brand to grow sustainably in an overseas market, she believes product strength must be supported by global branding, localization, and the operational capability to generate repeat purchases.

In this interview, we asked Eunyoung Lee about the problem W Concept Global is working to solve, the localization required for Korean brands to grow in the U.S. market, and the conditions that allow strong brands to be communicated more effectively to overseas customers.

Q1. What problem does W Concept USA, or W Concept Global, aim to solve?

W Concept Global established its U.S. subsidiary in 2014 and launched its U.S. website in 2017. Since then, it has supported the global expansion of strong Korean contemporary designer brands.

Korea has many sophisticated and competitive designer brands. However, it is often difficult for these brands to reach overseas customers directly, communicate themselves effectively in a local market, and manage the sales and operational processes that follow.

W Concept Global operates between brands and customers. For brands, it creates opportunities for global exports and growth. For customers, it curates and introduces premium Korean designer brands. Product translation, content, marketing, promotions, delivery, customer service, and influencer collaborations are all connected within a single platform.

W Concept USA, in particular, is responsible for building the local operational foundation that allows brands and customers to meet reliably in the U.S. market. Its core role is to reduce the gap between the market and the brand so that American customers can discover Korean brands naturally and continue to have a positive experience after making a purchase.

Ultimately, I believe W Concept Global’s role is to expand the points of connection between brands and customers, helping strong Korean brands become a natural part of global customers’ everyday lives and establish a lasting position in local markets.

Q2. What is the most important factor Korean brands should consider when seeking growth in the U.S. market?

I believe the most important factor is localization for the target market.

Localization does not simply mean translating product descriptions into English or shipping products to the United States. It is closer to redesigning the way the business operates based on U.S. consumer behavior, price sensitivity, delivery expectations, return culture, and customs environment.

The opportunity for K-brands in the U.S. market is clearly growing. Interest in Korean brands has increased around K-beauty, and this momentum is expanding into K-fashion and lifestyle. However, as interest in the market grows, it becomes even more important to establish a foundation that allows American customers to purchase without inconvenience.

At the same time, the external environment surrounding cross-border e-commerce into the United States is changing rapidly. In particular, the end of de minimis duty-free benefits and the expansion of tariff burdens require significant changes to the traditional direct-to-consumer cross-border model.

In the past, brands could maintain price competitiveness by shipping directly from Korea to customers in the United States. Now, however, they must consider the entire cost structure, including tariffs, customs clearance, shipping, and returns.

Korean brands preparing to enter the U.S. market need to consider not only content and marketing, but also logistics, customs clearance, HS Codes, DDP, returns, customer service, and local fulfillment. Whether customers can predict the final cost at checkout, whether delivery is reliable, whether returns are easy, and whether unexpected charges cause dissatisfaction are all important components of competitiveness.

Localization in the U.S. market is not simply a matter of screens or language. It is about reducing the uncertainty customers feel throughout the actual purchasing process. Trust in a brand can only be built when product descriptions, images, content, pricing, payment, delivery, returns, and customer service are all organized according to local expectations.

Going one step further, brands seeking sustainable growth in the United States should also consider how they can grow locally. Over the long term, it may be necessary to move beyond a direct-to-consumer cross-border model and localize parts of inventory and order fulfillment through local fulfillment centers, bonded warehouses, or B2B2C models.

Doing so can improve delivery speed and return convenience while also creating greater stability in pricing operations.

The U.S. market remains large and attractive. However, what matters now is not simply selling to American customers, but adapting the business model to the rules of the U.S. market.

For Korean brands to achieve sustainable growth in the United States, they need comprehensive localization that includes not only content and marketing, but also pricing, customs clearance, logistics, and returns.

Q3. Based on your long experience in global business, what do strong brands need in order to be communicated more effectively overseas?

For a strong brand to succeed overseas, product strength must be supported by global branding, localization, and the ability to generate repeat purchases.

Korean brands already have sophisticated products and distinctive stories. However, to be chosen by overseas customers, they must communicate why the brand is valuable, who it is for, when it is relevant, and why it is worth purchasing at its price—all in the language and sensibility of the local customer.

Through many years of experience in global e-commerce and brand business, I have learned that the journey from product discovery to purchase is highly multidimensional. Search, content, pricing, reviews, payment, delivery, returns, customer service, and promotions must work closely together. When a brand’s sensibility and story are added to this foundation, genuine brand growth can begin.

I do not believe the global growth of a strong brand happens all at once.

There is first an entry stage, in which the brand builds awareness and tests customer response. This is followed by an expansion stage, in which it develops hero products, encourages repeat purchases, and grows its performance within a particular country or category. Over the long term, the brand must then move toward a mature stage by building awareness, profitability, local partnerships, and brand equity.

Throughout this process, what matters is not simply achieving greater exposure, but creating a clear reason for customers to choose the brand.

When the brand’s mood and story, signature products, customer reviews, and post-purchase experience are built consistently, overseas customers can remember it as a coherent brand. In international markets in particular, even small inconveniences can influence brand perception, which is why branding and operations must work together.

The key is to preserve the essence of the brand while making it possible for local customers to discover it naturally, relate to it, and purchase from it again.

That is what allows a strong brand to achieve lasting growth overseas.

Strong products alone are not enough for a brand to remain relevant overseas.

A brand must communicate why it is valuable, who it is for, and why it is worth purchasing at its price in the language and sensibility of the local customer. That expectation must then be fulfilled across payment, delivery, returns, customer service, and the entire post-purchase experience. This is how trust in the brand is built.

W Concept Global does not view the U.S. market simply as another place to sell products.

It is a stage on which Korean brands must be reinterpreted within local expectations and grow into brands that customers repeatedly choose as part of their everyday lives.
